Alcohol and Drug Recovery and Diet

 

It is common for addicts in recovery to gain weight after they get clean. In many cases the abuse of drugs suppress the appetite. In others the anxiety of not having a substance to numb out on leads the recovering addict to overeat. Here we discuss the importance nutrition plays for recovering addicts.

Often times, the lack of nutrition and substance abuse leads to the loss of fat on the brain. The loss of fat on the brain makes decisions, impulses and reasoning weak. For this reason we encourage our clients to “good fats” for their diet.

Like other animal products, pork rinds contain saturated fat, which is linked to increased risk of both heart disease and cancer. The “right “ fats mainly come from plants and fish: the monounsaturated fats in almonds and avocados, the polyunsaturated fats in soy and seeds, the omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts (and fish), and the omega-6 fatty acids in nuts and seeds and their oils. Studies have shown that they also may lower your odds of a multitude of conditions, including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and depression.

And though all fats, healthy or otherwise contain a fair amount of calories (about 9 per gram) , a little bit may keep you from getting ravenous between meals. Fat as a diet food? That’s right! As long as you keep your fat calories to no more that 30% of your total calories

  • Avocados
  • Olives
  • Olive Oil
  • Peanuts
  • Peanut Butter
  • Edamame
  • Sunflower Seeds
